R.I. jobless to benefit from federal stimulus bill

Neil Downing    Email

More than 35,000 out-of-work Rhode Islanders could soon start receiving an extra $25 in their weekly unemployment benefit as a result of the federal economic stimulus bill that is close to approval.

In addition, more than 16,000 Rhode Islanders who would have run out of their benefits later this year will be able to continue collecting as a result of the measure, state officials said today.

The provisions would take effect shortly after the legislation is signed into law by President Obama, said Raymond A. Filippone, assistant director of the state Department of Labor and Training who oversees the state's unemployment insurance program.

State officials are already preparing to put the measures into effect, Filippone said in an interview at the Department of Labor and Training's headquarters in Cranston.

Rhode Island's 10-percent unemployment rate is the highest in more than 30 years and one of the highest in the nation.

Isn't that wonderful! The lazy Rhode Islander's are encouraged to continue their lack of inspiration and others, like my husband and I, who work two jobs to provide for our family, can continue to provide for the lazy.

Not everyone is lazy...i work 3 jobs and i still need assistance, there arent many jobs available that will pay enough to cover a persons mortgage...lets go a little easy with the lazy comments, some of us do try.

Wow! $25????? Thanks America!!! How much has Iraq gotten for the last seven years? This is great. I'm so glad my tax money went to Freedom.

I hope you know how fortunate you are that you have 2 jobs to go to( 4 between you and your husband). I hope you never have to be in the position of any of our fellow Rhode Islanders who are unemployed. You should never judge.

PS I am employed.

Susan, get a clue. You are lucky that you and your husband have jobs. Many people are out of work through no fault off their own and would love to find work and get off unemployment. Hopefully if your job (s) suddenly disappear, you will have more sympathy for those that are in an unfortunate situation due to the horrible economic climate.

Seila said:

Then you should be very grateful for that. Not all unemployed people want to be out of work. There really is nothing out there and too many people to fill very few positions.

Insulted by your comment said:

You are lucky to have your job and smart to try and keep it......but incredibly ignorant for thinking that people collecting unemployment are lazy......obviously you have no clue what it's like to find a job where thousands of others are also trying to find jobs in a shrinking job market. Maybe someday you'll get an opportunity to you find yourself unemployed. Maybe then you'll understand what someone on unemployment is feeling - I hope then someone calls you lazy, see how you feel. By the way, I'm employed.

Susan, you just haven't been laid off from your four jobs yet!

These people have all experienced "involuntary separation".

When YOU get laid off, you'll be grateful to have some income to feed your kids and keep a roof over your heads while you and all the rest of us look for work together.

Wow -- what compassion you have for your fellow Rhode Islanders... Your comment seems to infer that everyone on unemployement is lazy. Do you stereotype other groups and give them negative characteristics? I hope you work very hard to keep your two jobs, so you will be able to pay your mortgage and bills and you won't lose your house like those lazy Rhode Islanders who just happened to have lost their job in a national economic melt down that they did not cause. Get my point. Please be a little more undertanding of your fellow Rhode Islanders. Thank you.

Well Susan, it isn't at all wonderful that more help is needed and on its way in the unemployment arena -- it's tragic.

Please be advised that there are many unemployed in Rhode Island who are not at all lazy, but rather challenged by the lack of suitable job offerings, most especially for those who hold higher education degrees. The job market in Rhode Island has always been less inviting to the educated than our neighboring states; now it is equally hostile to mid- and upper-level positions, as well as the mix of blue collar and service industry jobs.

Sadly our current unemployment rules don't make it easy to work part time and partially collect or to take temporary positions and resume collecting. We could use some restructuring in benefits that would help the unemployed get back into the workplace, part time or full time, in a more creative fashion.

I've yet to meet someone collecting benefits who would choose unemployment over being back at their job working for a living and being a productive, contributing member of society and supporting their family. The unemployed are not your typical moochers trying to finagle a buck from the government for nothing. For the most part, they are workers out of work who want to get back to work.

Hats off to both you and your husband for having the ability to work two jobs. I'm sure there are many who would welcome that opportunity. It will be a great day when there are enough jobs to go around that everyone has the option to work two! Consider yourself fortunate.

That's nice to add $25 to each check but how about getting claims that have been filed for over a month started. filed claim beginning of january and have not heard a word from RIDLT, good thing we have another pay coming in or we would be homeless by now

Well Susan, I wonder how you will feel if you or your husband loose one or both of your jobs due to this recession.

Yes, some folks take advantage of the system, but there are a lot of honest people out there out of work looking for jobs and just not having any luck- even with temp agencies and part time work.

There's a lot more wasted from your tax funds than the small percentage that goes to unemployment.

i STRONGLY suggest-you get down on your knees and thank the good Lord that you have jobs at all!!!!!

Dave said:

Well you are lucky that you have jobs.

How about giving me one of those two jobs you have.

Been out of work well over a year and this does nothing for me. Those who have exhausted their benefits will get nada from this it appears.

The 10% RI unemployment rate doesn't take this into effect. Rate is prob closed to 15 - 20%

Mike P said:

I wonder if you would feel the same way of one of your employers shut down or "downsized" you. I didn't collect unemployment because I wanted to be lazy; I busted my rear looking for another job (you know you need three documented leads a week to collect, right?) in this great job market. And at the *maximum* benefit, unemployment barely covered rent and COBRA for my family, so we could all kick back and live off your tax dollars if we just shut off the electricity, gas, phone, and heat and stopped eating.

Golden years said:

This is a laugh. My neighbor who applied for unemployment 3 months ago still hasn't received a check. He still has no job prospects, and at age 60 he is really up the creek, as it appears that no one is interested in interviewing him, let alone hiring him.

I'm glad it couldn't happen to me.

ANGRYTM said:

Well SUSAN that's great that you and your husband are lucky enough to each have two jobs. I myself do as well. But there are people out there that cannot find even one job. You must not pay attention to the news and the news paper that theses people are mostly the aftermath of position cuts, layoffs and company closings. I believe that's far from LAZY and you should be ashamed that you would say such a thing because you or your husband could be JOBLESS tomorrow!!! If would read the story posted just a few stories above this that more people in Pawtucket and New Bedford are losing their jobs today...NOW THAT'S LAZY HUH!!!

I am appalled at your comment about all unemployeed people.. I was a very successful and educated professionaland was compensated very well.. I worked from the time I was 15 putting myself through schooling also.. Unfortunately, I lost my job 2 years ago due to downsizing.. Upper management positions were elimintaed and what positins remained were farmed out to Southern States to save on payroll.. I am willing to travel for work but that was a bit much... I tried for two years to find work. Any kind of work.. While I looked I did collect and am thankful I was able to... I am not a lazy person!!! While being on unemployment is not only physically and emotionally draining, it is also embarassing because of people like you.

I am now self employeed due to lack of available employment and it is a struggle every day to make ends meet.. So much for the American Dream.. DO NOT BE SO UPPITY. YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF IN THE SAME SITUATION SOONER THANK YOU THINK.
