R.I. Foundation to launch Black Philanthropy Initiative

PROVIDENCE_ The Rhode Island Foundation will launch a Black Philanthropy Initiative devoted to causes and issues affecting black Rhode Islanders, it was announced today by Neil Steinberg, foundation president.

The public is invited to attend the affair, Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Providence Black Repertory Company.

A panel moderated by Marion Orr, director of Brown University's Taubman Center and professor of political science, will feature Keith Stokes, executive director of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, Nellie Gorbea, executive director of HousingWorks RI, and Kenneth Wong, Brown University professor of education and lead author of Black Community in Rhode Island, an environmental study commissioned by the Foundation in 2008.

Panelists will focus on housing, financial literacy, and job training.
