Cicilline: Pothole patching to begin on Providence arteries

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Mayor David N. Cicilline has put Parks Department crews to work assisting the Department of Public Works in filling in potholes.

The mayor said that effective today, eight full-time crews will be filling potholes throughout the city. The trucks are equipped with a new high performance patch material that has proven effective in repairing potholes, even in wet conditions, he said in a news release.

"Of course, the most effective, long-term solution to improve road conditions is through our citywide repaving program," Cicilline said in a statement. "However, given the impact of severe weather on our roads, we will act quickly to improve safety and reduce the wear and tear on people's cars."

According to the mayor's office, the public works department conducted a citywide review of Providence's 370 miles of roadway to determine the extent of the pothole problem. It will focus on filling potholes on main arteries before working their way to secondary roads.

"A combination of extremely cold weather followed by intermittent thawing has made combating potholes this winter especially challenging for our staff," said John Nickelson, Public Works director. "Patching is not a cure-all for repairing potholes, however, it's the most immediate response to a pressing problem."

Crews are using a "high performance cold mix patch" that the mayor's office says will last 3.5 times longer than the conventional pothole patching material.

Anyone with concerns about specific potholes on city streets should contact the Office of Neighborhood Services at 421-2489.

Neighborhood services, I thought they only handled tax issues. The streets are a mess the Mayor should be ashamed.

What exactly were these eight full time crews doing yesterday?

Why wait till February 11th? I've seen these same holes since November - I believe in "clean as you go", the city and the Mayor should have been on top of this long ago.

Okay, it's March 11th. I've yet to see a pothole filled.

Simple request, email me when you've got ONE POTHOLE filled. Try under the I95 overpass on Point St. Try Dean street between Atwells and Broadway. Anywhere - you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a pothole.

Are you so in love with your own voice that you think an infomorecial will make us happy???

I'm sure you're a smart guy. But can you get a pothole filled? Apparently not. Show me! Tell me what street has been repaired - I have yet to see ONE!
