PROVIDENCE, RI -- A House committee will hear testimony today on two bills that would prohibit texting while driving, and another that would restrict the use of mobile telephones while driving. The House Committee on Corporations will hear testimony at the Rise of the House in Room 203. Two of the bills -- 2009-H 5021, by Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston), and 2009-H 5022, by Rep. Joanne M. Giannini (D-Dist. 7, Providence) -- would outlaw reading, writing or sending text messages while driving. Another bill -- 2009-H 5242, by Rep. Peter F. Kilmartin (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket) -- would prohibit drivers from using a mobile phone that is not equipped with a hands-free device. The bill would also make it a violation to drive while wearing earphones or a headset that covers both ears. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. If I'm not mistaken, they chuckled at Rep. Kilmartin's 'hands free cell phone' bill years ago.
He was right then, and more than that now; because of these "texting" instances we all run into while driving.
I hope the powers wrap those two bills together and pass them quickly, lives are literally at stake.

Seeing that this is RI, don't be surprised if these don't pass. And I'm sure Mr Brown will raise a fury over everyone's right to text while driving. So who cares if they are a menace to every other driver.
