R.I. municipalities seek stimulus funds for road fixes

With $137 million to fix roads and bridges coming to Rhode Island under the federal economic stimulus plan, some local officials are wondering why they aren't getting money to fix local roads that they can't afford to fix themselves.

There ought to be "some little crumb to go to the municipalities," said Alan Brodd, who heads the Rhode Island Public Works Association.

The state Department of Transportation says it must pursue projects that are ready to go out to bid, in order to meet deadlines to qualify for the money. That means projects that are already designed, with state approval and any needed environmental permits already in hand.
