PROVIDENCE--Jorge Cartagena, 26, of Norcross, Georgia, was ordered held without bail today after he was brought before Judge Walter Gorman in District Court on a charge of murder.

Cartagena is accused of shooting Junior Sanchez, 32, on Superior Street on Aug. 10. He entered no plea, as is customary in felony cases at the District Court level.
The police said that Cartagena waived extradition when investigators traced him to Alabama last month.

According to court records, officers heard shots and found Sanchez lying in the street. He died later in Rhode Island Hospital.

Witnesses told the police that a fight had broken out between Sanchez and John Cartagena, brother of Jorge.

Sanchez pulled out a weapon and fired at John Cartagena, the witnesses said, striking him in the hand. They said Jorge Cartagena ran up and fired several shots, fatally wounding Sanchez.

The court scheduled a Feb. 20 bail hearing for the suspect.
