PROVIDENCE -- Naomi McCoy, the 6-week-old Newport baby who the police say was beaten to death by her father, died of "blunt impact injuries" to the head, torso, and extremities, according to the state medical examiner's office.

The baby died Friday, after being hospitalized three days earlier with a fractured skull and broken ribs. The Newport police said that the baby's father, Rachin McCoy, told detectives that she had fallen off a couch. But after an autopsy this weekend, the medical examiner concluded that Naomi died of "fatal child abuse syndrome."

McCoy, 21, is expected to be brought to District Court, Newport, tomorrow on a murder charge. He initially had been charged with first-degree child abuse. He is being held without bail as an alleged probation violator for convictions of simple assault and marijuana possession.

McCoy lived with the baby and her mother, whom the police have not identified, in the Festival Field Apartments at Apt. 186, 90 Girard Ave. The police say that McCoy, who worked for the Wal-Mart store in Newport, was at home alone with the baby when she was injured.

On Saturday, McCoy's family held a candlelight vigil for Naomi and proclaimed McCoy's innocence.
