The state medical examiner concluded that Naomi McCoy was a victim of "fatal child abuse syndrome" and that she suffered "blunt impact injuries" to her head, torso and extremities. McCoy was initially charged with first-degree child abuse. Bail had been set at $500,000 with surety, but he was ordered held without bail as an alleged violator of probation from convictions for simple assault and marijuana possession. Naomi was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday with a fractured skull and broken ribs. McCoy, who worked for the Wal-Mart store in Newport, was home alone with the baby when she was injured, according to the the Newport police. The police said McCoy, who lived with the baby and her mother at Festival Field apartments, told detectives the baby had fallen off the couch. |
