A scene from Departures, about a laid-off cellist who answers a help-wanted ad for "Departures," thinking the job title is "travel agent"; it turns out to be "mortician."

The odds-on favorite to win the best foreign language Academy Award, Waltz With Bashir, the first animated film nominated in this category, was upset by the Japanese film Departures (released in Japan as Okuribito) That film's chances recently increased from the Las Vegas oddsmakers who apparently were onto somethng..

Departures has yet to have many playdates in the United States, but Bashir, about a soldier from the 1982 Israel-Lebanon War trying to recover his repressed memories about genocide in the war, has played many well-received engagements. It is scheduled to open Friday, Feb. 27, at the Avon Cinema.
