WOONSOCKET -- The International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local 404 says it is disappointed with the Woonsocket City Council's approval Monday of Mayor Susan Menard's budget reductions that include a 5 percent cut to all city employees' salaries and a requirement that they pay 15 percent of their health insurance costs.

"The IBPO answered the call for cooperation, understanding the economic times...during our negotiations we were told the city needed to save $524,000 from our department and we came up with a savings of $611,000 with taxpayers and voters in mind. These proposals were rejected by the city," the IBPO said in a statement.

The IBPO amended its proposals a second time, but the amendment was rejected and the IBPO was told there would be no more negotiations, according to the union.

"The actions taken by the mayor and the City Council in the end will not save the city money but will only cost them more in legal fees and the return of employee benefits taken as a result of this action," the IBPO's statement said.

Again it is another Union that is going to cost the taxpayers tons of money that we do not have every where in the private and public sector people are paying for more benefits or taking paycuts or not receiving benefits at all. If we want to end this recession Obama needs to rid the United States of Unions. They had their time and place in history, but that time and place is gone to the wayside which is why we can't compete on a global market. It is not just the police that will be taking the pay cut it is all the city's workers across the board. They would have a valid complaint if it was just the police taking the cut but since it is across the board they should have no complaints.

You obviously don't work in a public service type job because if you did you would understand the importance of unions. Without them you would have no police officers or firefighters because they would all quit and no one would apply for those jobs. Do you realize the average base salary of a police officer is around $45,000 before taxes? People see reports in the news of police officers earning close to or over $100,000 and get all up in arms. You have to realize to make that much money these officers are working 70 - 80 hours a WEEK. If police couldn't collectively bargain for benefits they would receive none! When you're in trouble and need help the police are always the first we think of to call upon. Unfortunately when we need help in saving money we think of them first as well. Go ahead, keep cutting the budgets and salary for police and fire departments. The Governor even wants to eliminate minimum manning. One day you will call 911 for help but no one will be available to help you because the few officers or firefighters working are all too busy!
