Today in history: A Lincoln bribery trial

One year ago today: Jurors get a first-hand account of bribery in Lincoln as a car dealer testifies in ex-Town Administrator Jonathan F. Oster's bribery trial about how a member of the town's Planning Board, and a then-Oster political ally, Robert R. Picerno, shook him down for $25,000 in early 2001.

5 years ago today: Providence saw a 10-percent decrease in reported major crimes last year, compared with 2002, thanks to a strong community outreach initiative and the good work of its officers, city leaders say.

25 years ago today: Narragansett Bay Commission officials theaten to shut off sewer service to Providence City Hall and other municipal buildings or impose a moratorium on new sewer connections in the city if the Cianci administration does not pay its $4.8-million bill.


On the international front:

On this day six years ago, Secretary of State Colin Powell urged the U.N. Security Council to move against Iraq, saying that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and was harboring terrorists - claims that later turned out to be false.
