Here's what to do when you smell gas

PROVIDENCE -- National Grid, the company that provides natural gas to Rhode Islanders, offers these tips to avoid problem when an odor of gas is detected:

Leave your home or business immediately, taking everyone with you, including pets.

Leave all doors and windows open behind you. Don't re-enter the home to open doors and windows.

Don't use phones, computers, appliances, elevators or garage door openers.
Don't touch electrical outlets, switches or doorbells.

Don't smoke or use a lighter, match or other open flame.

Don't position or operate vehicles or powered equipment where leaking natural gas may be present.

From a neighbor's home or nearby business, call National Grid at 800-640-1595 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hearing & Speech Impaired: Dial 711.

You can also call 911, who will contact your local fire department. They will in turn notify National Grid to respond and investigate.
