PORTSMOUTH - The final pieces of the wind tower at Portsmouth High School, rising 340 feet in the air, will be hoisted into place Saturday morning, with officials expecting the turbine to begin generating electricity on Tuesday. When assembly is complete, the 1.5-megawatt turbine will be the tallest structure on Aquidneck Island, about as tall as the Westin Providence hotel in downtown Providence, dwarfing another nearby wind tower on the grounds of Portsmouth Abbey. But completion of the construction project was pushed back to the weekend because of weather-related delays in shipping the turbine, according to Richard W. Talipsky, chairman of the Portsmouth Economic Development Committee, a group of volunteers who have coordinated the $3-million project. |
