A University of Rhode Island e-mail to the school's students about financial aid this week was supposed to be a one-way communication. Instead, because of an erroneous computer setting, a student's mother sent information about the family's financial footing to to every student at the university -- some 13,000 in all -- the school newspaper, The Good 5¢ Cigar, reported today. The Cigar reported that on Monday, URI's Enrollment Services department sent out a mass e-mail on a supposedly secure listserv. Sophomore Andrew Schicho, of Cazenovia, N.Y., forwarded the e-mail to his mother, Cindy, who clicked on "reply all." That should have given her an error message. Instead, it sent her e-mail to the whole student body. The glitch in the system has been dealt with, and the listserv once again won't accept replies, the Cigar reported. |
