PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Officials from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence have met with teachers at three city parochial schools to discuss reorganization plans.

The diocese tells WJAR-TV the plan involves St. Ann School on Branch Avenue, St. Patrick's School on Smith Street, and Holy Ghost School on Swiss Avenue.

The schools have a combined enrollment of about 500 students in kindergarten through eighth-grade.

Diocesan officials did not elaborate on the plans after Wednesday's meeting, but plan on releasing more information following a meeting with parents scheduled for Thursday night.

The diocese has said it needs to respond to the economic climate, dropping enrollment, changing demographics and the increasing cost of running the schools.

How they have fallen. I attended St. Ann's when it was Msgr. Bove School. There were at least 300 to 400 of us there at the time.

It's just gotten so expensive to attend those schools. A real shame though.

I also attended Msgr. Bove (Class of 1980) and remember a full and vibrant school. People don't stay in the city anymore--they don't want to raise a family in Providence: it's no longer the city it was in my youth, that's for sure.
Very sad.
