The sentencing of Gilbert Delestre, who was convicted of killing his girlfriend's 3-year-old nephew, has been postponed until February 18, according to a spokesman for Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch. Delestre faces a maximum penalty of life in prison for the killing of Thomas "T.J." Wright in Woonsocket in 2004. Delestre was convicted of second-degree murder and conspiracy Dec. 4 after a trial in Superior Court. Delestre's sentencing had been scheduled for today, but it was postponed because Superior Court Judge Netti Vogel is presiding over another case, according to the attorney general's office. Prosecutors said Delestre and his girlfriend, Katherine Bunnell, took turns beating the boy after they returned from a night out drinking and found a mess of yogurt and milk on the new carpet of their Woonsocket apartment. Bunnell was T.J.'s aunt and foster mother. She was also convicted of second-degree murder and conspiracy after a trial in May. Delestre admitted that his actions caused T.J.'s death, but he claimed they were unintentional. |
