SOMERSET, Mass. -- Police officers were eating grinders as the owner and store manager of Gus's Pizza handed out sandwiches and drinks this afternoon as they drove through the scene of a fatal house explosion.

Gus Skarpos and Ray Simonai said they felt bad about what happened. "What can you do?" Simonai said. "Just help out."

Skarpos, who lives on County Street (Route 138), said he felt the Thursday night explosion at 93 New York Ave.

"It shook the house," he said. From the smoke and flames, he said, he could see where it was.

His wife made some food, which they delivered along with pizzas to the emergency shelter at Chace Elementary School.

"I cannot believe the unity of the people," Skarpos said, referring to the volunteers who came to help. "Nobody had to tell anybody nothing."

His cousin, who owns Excellent Pizza on County Street, and the nearby Dunkin' Donuts also donated food to the shelter Thursday night.

"I feel bad about what happened," Skarpos said, and he and Simonai drove off to the next location.
