NORTH PROVIDENCE--Mayor Charles M. Lombardi has turned to a longtime teacher and former high school principal to help the town deal with sewage and runoff problems. Louis A. Lanni Jr., a high school principal from 1990 to 1994, stands to earn about $14,000 a year documenting sanitation issues, handling filings mandated by the federal government and carrying out other administrative tasks, according to the town's director of administration, Rocco Gesualdi. Lanni has no previous sanitation experience, but his administrative skills are quite sufficient, Gesualdi said, adding that it would be a lot more expensive to hire a specialist for the job. The town's Public Works department needed a consultant with administrative skills to handle a backlog of sanitation-related paperwork required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Gesualdi said. After Lanni handles the pending issues, officials can think about how to deal with sanitation paperwork on a continuing basis, Gesualdi said, adding that the consultant's pay is based on an annual salary of $14,000 but the length of his employment is uncertain. Lanni, also a former councilman, was a close ally of the late Mayor Salvatore Mancini and he is related by marriage to former Mayor Richard Fossa. He resigned his principal's post in 1994 after the School Committee investigated an incident that occurred while he was serving as a chaperone on a school field trip.
