SMITHFIELD -- The Smithfield Police Department is investigating a head-on crash that happened around 3:21 a.m. on New Year's Day. The drivers of both cars, a man and a woman from Connecticut and Rhode Island, were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries that don't appear to be life threatening, according to the police. The police said a mid-size SUV driving west on Route 44, known in the area as Putnam Pike, and a small passenger car driving east collided head-on near Waterman's Lake. Both drivers had to be extricated from the cars. The police refused to identify the drivers, citing an ongoing investigation. The road was closed for about two hours while the police interviewed witnesses and reconstructed the crash. No criminal charges have been filed so far. |
