PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Tenants and homeowners will rally at the State House today to lobby state legislators to protect families from eviction. Rhode Island has one of the highest foreclosure and unemployment rates in the nation. Among the proposals: declaring a moratorium on foreclosures and evictions, and stopping no-fault evictions, so that tenants and homeowners affected by foreclosures can stay in the house while paying rent to the bank that holds the mortgage unless there is "just cause" to evict them, such as nonpayment of rent. The rally, organized by the Rhode Island Bank Tenant & Homeowner Association, will be at 3:45 p.m. in the State House rotunda. The legislature convenes at 4 p.m. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Vicious comments, personal attacks and profanity won't be published. I understand the pust to help the tenants who are up to date on rent payments, but why would they also group the former homeowners into this group? I believe the foreclosure is "just cause" to evict them since they did not pay the mortgage.
