PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Senate Finance Committee will resume hearings on a proposed overhaul of the state's Medicaid system today at 3 p.m. The meeting, open to the public, will be held in Room 313 in the State House. Governor Carcieri has proposed the changes, known as the Global Medicaid Waiver, as part of a larger budget proposal to close a projected $357 million current-year budget deficit. Carcieri's supplemental budget proposal is before the House Finance Commitee. Yesterday, the state's congressional delegation spoke against the proposal. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Approving Don Carcieri's medicaid waiver will be a mistake of "global" proportions. This is Don Carcieri's WMD. He has no details or a viable plan, and he's preying on the fears and insecurities of Rhode Islanders, including our elected officials.
I call upon our Legislature to tell the Lucas Group to go home to its "Live Free or Die" State and take its waiver with it; to tell Don Carcieri that Rhode Island has a proud Democratic tradition of caring for our elderly and poor; and to tell Don Carcieri that his local control, small government, Republican philosophy is exclusionary, anachronistic, and indefensible.
