WESTERLY -- The Westerly Police Department is investigating a two-car accident that happened early this morning on Route 1 and sent three to the hospital. Ice on the road may have caused the accident, the police said.

Police Chief Edward A. Mello said two cars, traveling in opposite directions on Post Road (Route 1) near the Westerly Chamber of Commerce's office, crashed around 7:20 this morning.

The driver and passenger in one of the cars and the driver, and lone occupant, of the second car were taken to Westerly Hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Mello said the accident remains under investigation.
