PROVIDENCE -- The Providence Public Library has launched a food collection drive to benefit the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. The drive will continue through May at all library branches.

The most needed items include:

  • Protein: Canned soup, tuna, meat, peanut butter, nuts, canned and dried beans, canned fruits and vegetables, including juices, and tomato sauce;
  • Carbohydrates: Breakfast cereals, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, crackers, granola bars and cheese & cracker packages, canned stews and chili, and extra virgin olive oil.

The Food Bank asks that people making food donations take note of expiration dates. Also, while the Food Bank asks that no glass jars of baby food be given, boxed cereals and formula are needed, if they are unopened and within date code.

Meanwhile, Seven Stars Bakery is celebrating its 8th anniversary today by donating all of their sales -- and tips -- today from their two Providence stores to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
