By Thomas J. Morgan Major Thomas F. Oates III, commander of detectives, said that a man with a scarf wrapped around his face walked into the Bank of America at 111 Westminster St. at about 11:30 and went to the writing counter. A security guard noticed the scarf, Oates said, and told the man to remove it. Oates said the man engaged the guard in small talk, and pulled enough of the scarf away to satisfy the guard, who walked away. The robber then approached a teller and handed over a note indicating he had a weapon, Oates said. He demanded money. Oates said the teller refused to hand over any cash, and the man left the bank. Patrolman Robert Hamlin shortly afterward noticed a man matching the robber's description, and arrested him near Westminster and Bridgham Streets. Oates said the suspect had not been charged by late afternoon. He said money was recovered, but did not know how much because officers were still interrogating the man. |
