East Providence Parks and Recreation employees have the task of collecting used Christmas trees left out with the trash by city residents. What a waste of time, money, and energy.
There is an alternative to heaving the holiday tree onto the dump truck. Cut off the branches with your lopper and use them for winter cover on your garden beds, protecting them from frost heaves in the spring. They will decompose slowly and add nutrients to the soil. Use the remaining yule log in your fireplace next year after letting it season. Nice holiday tradition.
