Jorge Cartagena, the 22-year-old man wanted by Providence police in the Aug. 10 slaying of Junior Sanchez, has been captured by federal marshals in Birmingham, Ala.
Police said that Cartagena was taken into custody Wednesday by members of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force who were carrying out warrants obtained by Providence police.

Sanchez was shot and killed on Superior Street in Providence in August, and as a result of a lengthy investigation by Detectives Maurice Green and Timothy McGann and Det. Sgt. William Dwyer, police learned that his alleged assailant, Cartagena, had fled to the Birmingham area.

Police here noted that during the investigation another Providence fugitive was located as well: Gabriel Payamps, who was wanted on a charge of felony assault in connection with the shooting and wounding of Pedro Sanchez on Sayles Street in Providence, in April 2007, was apprehended in Norcross, Ga., by the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force in Atlanta.
