PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- As the House of Representatives got under way this afternoon, House Speaker William J. Murphy announced the creation of a 12-member commission to "look into the potential economic opportunities in the development of port facilities in Rhode Island.'' The target date for the commission to report its findings is Sept. 1. "It's time that the state of Rhode Island takes a comprehensive look at our underutilized assets to bolster job creation and grow our economy,'' Murphy said. The move comes as the Ocean State struggles with a deficit and high unemployment. -- Katherine Gregg, Journal State House bureau CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Quonset Point should become the center of New England's new energy economy, if we can get a wind turbine manufacturing facility there. And while we're at it, let's put a streetcar plant there too to provide the region with streetcars, buses, or trains for their transportation choices.
That would generate new jobs and new exports.
