Today in history: space shuttle Challenger explodes

On this day in Rhode Island history:

A year ago today: PROVIDENCE - Women & Infants Hospital moved a step closer to completing a $76.8-million addition when construction workers hoisted into place the structure's final steel beam.
Staff members, hospital officials, as well as youngsters who were treated as infants in the hospital's neonatal intensive-care unit, celebrated the occasion with a topping-off ceremony.

5 years ago today: GTECH Holdings Corp.announces it has chosen USAA Real Estate Co., of Texas, and Commonwealth Ventures LLC, of Connecticut, to jointly develop its $65-million corporate headquarters.

25 years ago today: Three companies have decided to move into the state industrial park at Quonset Point and Davisville. The developments are expected to create hundreds of new jobs, thousands of dollars in revenue for the state and millions of dollars in income for the businesses themselves and their suppliers.

On the national front:

On this day 23 years ago, space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, killing all seven crew members.
