EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- In the end it was Yugo's wagging tail that saved him. The brown and white dog's front legs were burned so severely he could barely stand. He had another burn on his right ear. The woman used her handkerchief to place under the 80-pound dog so she could lift him into her car because he couldn't move much. She brought him to East Providence Animal Control Center. Workers took him to to the East Bay Animal Hospital in Seekonk so veterinarians could treat him. William Muggle, animal control supervisor at the East Providence Animal Control Center, said the burns were about two weeks old and so severe that veterinarians considered whether they should put the dog to sleep. But Yugo had a great disposition and wagged his tail a lot. "The dog had a great disposition even with the severity of his wounds. I was picking him up to walk him up the stairs of the ER and he wagged his tail and he didn't growl. Had he been an iffy dog, there would have been a question about the amount of money that is needed" to heal him and then try to get him adopted, he said. Workers at the animal control center named him Yugo, after the Yugo automobile built in Yugoslavia in the 1980's for his compact size. Muggle said Yugo's care will cost in the hundreds. He said workers at the animal control center raised more than $100 for his care and so did some of the other animal advocacy agencies. The animal control center is looking for donations for Yugo's care. The agency is also looking for any information about the possible owner of the dog. The owner did nothing about Yugo's wounds, Muggle said. He was also malnourished. When he came out of the anesthesia after the veterinarians treated his wounds, he ate two cans of dog food. He is about five years old. Muggle said the veterinarian could not determine whether the burns came from a chemical or hot water, but it did not appear that the dog had stepped in the liquid because his paws were not burned. Anyone who had information regarding the dog or wishes to make a donation should call the animal control center at 435-7675. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. people need to start treating animals kinder and remember if you want a pet, you should love it as though it was part of your family, just like a child. you would not burn a child would you. and also if you run over a BELOVED PET DO not LEAVE IT By itself to lay there and die, recently my neighbor ran over and killed my precious cat and left him there to die alone and did not even say she was sorry... LOVE THE ANIMALS, SHOW COMPASSION AND SYMPATHY.

I'd like to donate to a REWARD to find the jerk who did this to this sweet dog. I think 10 yrs behind bars w/b fair, don't you?

that poor dog, the owner should be imprisoned. Unfortunately because he is a pitbull adoption won't be easy. I just don't understand people

Many are suffering hardships right now, but that is NO EXCUSE to abuse animals. My heart breaks for this dog that has such a strong will to live through what he has been through. I pray he finds someone who will love him. I have three of my own and if I could rescue one more I would. I need to believe that there are more good people in the world than bad otherwise I would lose all respect for the human race.

Hats off to this wonderful lady for taking YY
Yugo to get the help he needed. It is
heartwarming to know that she took the
time to get him into her car and get him
help. I hope he finds a loving home who
will appreciate him.

The woman who took the time to stop for Yugo should be awarded a good samaritan medal. This breed of dog is so misunderstood, they are loving and trusting. It is the owners who are mean and vicious. The state of Rhode Island has to pass stiffer laws regarding abuse of all animals, at the present time this abuse of Yugo is considered a misdemeanor. SHAME ON OUR LAWMAKERS. Thanks to East Providence Animal Control for not giving up on Yugo. I know in these difficult times donations are difficult to come by, but, please citizens give a little for this poor dog.

For everyone that says that believes this animal should be treated better (i agree), you should take a look at how you live your life. Do you eat pigs? chickens? cows? How can you eat meat (murder) and have sympathy for another animal just because Americans say they are cute. All animals are cute and ALL animals deserve the respect and love this animal deserves. Think about it.

When I hear stories like this one my heart breaks! I just don't understand people...how long and how much effort does it take to LOVE a pet? What you get from them is multiplied thousands compared to the little bit of effort you need to put into it! The individual that either did this or allowed this poor animal to suffer for this extended time should be put away or tortured just like this (and I hate to be that way but...). I just pray that YUGO gets well soon and finds a loving home! I too would take him but wonder if the race will be on for so many people to adopt him! I hope so...

How bout a reward for those of us who obey the law, take care of our kids and get screwed by the government, banks and credit card companies day after day? Don't get me wrong this dog abuse is a terrible situation and the loser should be prosecuted. However this just cracks me up - with all that is wrong is this world this story gets the most comments, and now offers for a reward.

Another example of some "hero" taking their frustration and anger out on a defenseless animal.
I hope they find the puke that did this. Of course, "justice" will probably be community service and a slap on the wrist.

I hope I never cross paths with someone who has done something like that to a dog. He even wagged his tail after all that had been done to him. I hope Yugo gets better soon. The person who did that is just as capable of doing the same to a child and needs to be caught, one way or another.

I'm saying prayers for Yugo's recovery and that someone will take him into a loving forever home. Wish I could take him myself, but as a responsible pet owner I've already got a sizeable chunk of my household budget going to feeding and caring for my two canine kids. And I hope that people will look beyond his breed - my two mastiffs look scary but are the biggest babies I've ever met.

To Animal Lover: It's pretty low of you to take advantage of this poor abused dog’s situation as a means to promote your cause.
Man is carnivorous by design so get over it! Yes we eat cows, pigs, and chickens but we don't burn them and then throw them out. If you can't see the difference that's too bad.
Is it ok for you to kill a grain of wheat or a potato? What about trees? Do you live in a house or an apartment? How many beautiful living trees do you think were slaughtered to put a roof over your murderous head? These are living entities as well.
Please just go get a cheeseburger and get over yourself.

What is wrong with the people in this world? I think we should go back to the penalty of an eye for an eye. Let's how many people think twice if we decided to burn their legs like that as punishment. Too bad they didn't find the dog with the owner's arm in his mouth. An absolute shame!!!

Folks, Yugo is an "American Bulldog". This is different than the "American Bull Terrier" which is known as a Pit Bull. If you have ever seen a American Bulldog, you will know their personality is more mellow than a Pit Bull. Whoever adopts Yugo is going to have one sweet friend.

Animal Lover and Jim,
Take it outside. This is about the poor dog, not the bad manners you both share.
Jack, the credit card companies and banks can't mess with you unless you go into debt. A financially irresponsible human is less deserving of sympathy than an animal who's harmed no one.

I think that filling jails and using law enforcement on this is a waste of time. Law enforcement should be used for human abuse and murder. You don't even know if this was an accident of some kind.

I say we offer up a reward for the arrest of the guy that did this!! What a jerk!!

Hang in there Yugo!
Thank you to the people who helped poor Yugo!
I hope they catch the persons who did that to him
and prosecute them to the full extent of the law.

Doesn't this tragic story with a beautful rescue remind you of Crispy Critter, the dog set ablaze and rescued by a nurse about thirty years ago?
Isn't there a twisted evil inherent in those who mistreat domestic animals? Doesn't 'the Link' describe the connection between those who hurt domestic animals and then advance to murdering humans? Isn't it long and well documented?
When the devious deviant demonic vermin who committed this heinous crime be apprehended, shouldn't the courts take note of the link and hand him - we can safely assume it's a he - a long sentence, so as to protect both humans and animals?
Isn't this a valiant kind lady who rescued this poor creature who for two weeks - two weeks! - suffered this horrible condition, as he stood at death's door on a highway entrance?
Haven't some of us become most well acquainted with the cowards who harm domestic animals? Most well acquainted, Gerry? Filled with hate, in love with death, don't they deserve our prayers and pity, as well as a life in an institution where they can no longer present a danger to themselves or others?
How can we thank this kind soul who rescued one of God's creatures?

Poor pup. I hope the ASPCA is holding an investigation to try to find out the culprit that did this to this poor guy. What a cutie! Just look at those puppy eyes! I pray Yugo recovers fully and has a happy life! The person that did this to poor Yugo is probably a dog-fighting individual. Dog-fighting is cruel and inhumane and the pit-bull breed are the victims. Those that practice dog-fighting are ignorant and cowards and I hope they are caught and punished. Remember, what comes around, goes around!

to jim: you sound absurd. comparing a eating a grain to killing a pig.
this dog deserves a good home. good luck Yugo.

the inhumane treatment of this animal is not the mark of a civilized society. we should turn to our legislators to implement stringent laws for the protection of all animals, and see that they are enforced. no excuses!!!

A dog is man's best friend - no one in this world could ever or will ever be more loyal, more loving, more trusting, and more tolerating to a man than his dog. It is blood-curdling to know that a trusting, loving dog was subjected to this grim, obnoxious form of torture. It is nearly impossible to follow the teaching, "Pray for your enemies," when seeing something like this. One's natural instinct is to demand punishment which according to me would be to treat the one who caused this horrendous injury to this dog the same way the dog was treated, inflicting like injury. But I will try to do the nearly impossible thing and pray for the wretched soul of the torturer. Foremost though, my love, thoughts, and prayers go to Yugo and his saviours/healers.

He is an American Bulldog/pittie (not sure which type) MIX. He isn't a full-blooded American Bulldog, and, by the way, I've known more mellow pitties than American Bulldogs. :)
However, the stories calling him a "pit bull" are misleading even though that's technically what he is as American Bulldogs fall under the "pit bull" label sometimes (which seems to be growing rapidly). I won't complain, though. It's good for them to get some GOOD press for a change.
I've heard he's doing very well.

To everyone that makes nasty comments about Pit Bull Terriers or American Pittbul Terriers. They are both GENTLE and LOYAL breeds. Its all on how you train them. Just like kids that aren't brought up right turn into menances, so don't animals. Are you saying we should put kids down that have anger problems. I don't think so!
I have a Pit and she is the best thing that has ever happened to me. She is gentle with other animals, people, toddlers and babies. I had a small dog growing up and she was so aggressive to the point people wouldn't come to our house. My dog now wouldn't hurt a fly. If nobody adopts this poor animal, I will.
Stop giving these dogs such a bad rap, they are one of the most loyal and smart breeds out there. Its a shame that people have trained them to fight.
Good luck to Yugo. I wish him a great, safe, and happy future. To all you people that think pitbulls are worth nothing...you're missing out on something

I am SO glad to hear people comment that our legislators should step in to help the animals. The good news is that every year legislators introduce bills that will increase penalties for animal abuse, help prosecute abusers and so forth. It is very easy for citizens to voice their support to these bills. Go to the General Assembly link: http://dirac.rilin.state.ri.us/BillStatus/WebClass1.ASP?WCI=Index&WCE=callBillStatus&WCU& and search by the category "animal". Right now there are bills before the General Assembly that will create guidelines to limit the time dogs can be tied out in the heat/freezing weather without water, shelter, etc. You have no idea how many dogs die of heat exhaustion or freeze to death and this needs to be addressed. There is another bill that will help make the process that determines whether dogs are vicious or not more fair. Read these bills, contact your legislators or write your own bills if you need to. Writing to your legislators, calling them and meeting with them are all ways to help the animals. On behalf of the animals I ask you to take your enthusiasm voiced here to your legislators. This is how society progresses-by people speaking up for what they believe in.

Yay Yugo!! so glad to hear he is doing well. Thank goodness that woman was in the right place at the right time. Not many people out there would have given it a 2nd glance.
