FALL RIVER, Mass. -- A Fall River woman has been charged with reckless endangerment after her 4-year-old foster son suffered severe burns that required skin grafts, the police said. Kelly O'Brien, 29, of 915 Walnut St., was charged with wanton or reckless endangering of a child and permitting substantial injury to a child, both felonies. She is next due in court on April 17 for a pre-trial conference, court officials said. Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said the police received a complaint from the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families on Jan. 21 indicating doctors at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence had filed a child abuse report. "Hospital officials believe that the burns (are) not consistent with an accident," Mauretti said. The boy suffered third-degree burns to the right upper arm and second-degree burns to the left upper arm. He has since been removed from the house, said Alison Goodwin, a spokeswoman with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. He remains in state custody. Goodwin said she could not comment on the child's health status. Mauretti said O'Brien's live-in boyfriend had driven the child to Charlton Memorial Hospital. The boy was later transferred to Hasbro. On Jan. 23, police officers with a warrant seized a hair straightening iron from O'Brien's house and O'Brien was arrested. The case remains under investigation. I am so disgusted by the way people treat children that I cannot stand it. It makes me sick and furious and sad and I just don't understand what goes through a person's head. I get mad - even furious at my kids too - I understand the emotions that kids can provoke. But after a split second of rage, common sense should take over and even for that split second that I am enraged I still love them with all of my heart and would rather cut out my own beating heart than see them hurt. If you can't treat kids - or pets - properly, DON'T HAVE THEM. Neither one is required to live in this world so if you are a rotten person, do us all a favor and keep your rottenness to yourself.

Another child suffers... and once again no one posts here offering a reward

Oh my God! What is the matter with people? I've read too much this week of abuse against helpless children and animals. Are these people mentally ill, or just cruel?

People will go out of their way to help injured animals before helping an abused infant.

I am sickened by people who abuse a child or an animal - but I'm so thankful when I read about their rescue. I am amazed at comments, though, that reflect someone's thought that rescuing an animal takes away from an injured child. Should the girl in East Prov have just driven away in search of a child to protect? Did saving Yugo take away from saving this poor little boy??
Of course not... we should all do what we can, when we can... and the rest of us should applaud it. I am horrified to see abuse... but I am thrilled to see heroes. I hope that Jack and Jane are just disgusted and frustrated with this crappy world - and that they really don't begrudge an act of kindness in any form.
