By Amanda Milkovits PROVIDENCE -- The man found dead under an overpass on Eddy Street last Friday has been identified as 56-year-old Paul Langlais, of Coventry, according to a state health spokeswoman. The R.I. medical examiners office found that Langlais had died of heart disease. Langlais' body was found by a construction worker early Friday morning, after a night of frigid temperatures. Langlais was known to people at the Crossroads Rhode Island shelter in Providence, where he'd last been seen two years ago. The police said they also knew Langlais; he had a long criminal record with charges related to alcohol abuse. Correction: An earlier posting misspelled Langlais' name. What is the point of putting the last sentence in about him being know to the police? What did that accomplish other then adding further insult to someone who has passed away? I challenge the author to give a valid reason why that was put i

Mike, Couldn't agree with you more. Isn't it bad enough that he died alone?

I agree with the comment- why put personal info in this story or any story like this? No one needs to know this persons personal information!
I agree, let him rest in peace...He died of a heart condition...it's not like he was trying to murder someone...He is still someones family, possibly a brother or son...

I agree 100%. They always do that. This guy died of heart disease. It is complete BS how they need to slander someone even in death. The author of this post needs to apologize to the readers and the deceased.

You make a valid point, Mike. If they bothered to investigate this guy's past like that, I'm sure they could have found something positive to say as an end note. Maybe we're supposed to be happy for the police because they no longer have to deal with Mr. Langlois.

I agree with 12:02's statement. Adds nothing to the story except more sorrow for his family. Interestingly enough, a check of the Judicial criminal records website reveals no Paul Langlois of his age with any criminal record! While the author is at it, explain that to his family and your readers!

More importantly, if the guy had such a "long criminal record" for which he was known to police, why does there not seem to be any record of him in the RI Adult Criminal Information
Database?

If the guy didn't have a record, then mike's right, it's just gossip.

Actually if you check http://www.courts.state.ri.us/ you will see he did have a criminal record. He was charged with 1st and 2nd degree sexual assualt and conspiracy.

The guy was charged 20 years ago with one thing! It was in Newport- for sexual assault. Providence police said he had 'long record' and crimes related to alcohol abuse. The guy has never been arrested in Providence County! Irresponsible journalism....Check your facts!!! Just because a police officer said it is true-does not make it a fact! You have resources to double check-use them!

Why would you write something like that. He died a miserable death and someone to bring up the past .

So happy I don't live there anymore...Born and raised in Rhode Island and never witnessed any caring for the homeless. Atleast he is not suffering anymore..

HEY DAVE AT 4:08, WRONG GUY. THE ONE YOU ARE REFERRING TO IS 41 YEARS OLD, NOT 56 YEARS OLD AS THE ARTICLE STATED. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT DBAG BEFORE YOU SLANDER SOMEONE!

Could be that he's one of the homeless alcoholics that Providence Rescue transports to RI Hospital 5-6 times a week. Each.

Agree with comments above. Why state that this unfortunate man had a criminal record? Is that EVER done in obituaries? I believe not. No reason to disparage the deceased, leave some dignity intact.

Whether or not he had a "long criminal record" is irrelevant. The purpose of this article is to inform the readership of the identity and cause of death of the victim. I heard Channel 12's report, and no where in their broadcast did they mention that he had a long criminal record. This, to me, shows more professionalism than the Journal can ever hope to have.

no thanx to the govs closing and wrecking the homeless shelter to make a state police barracks.
now we have neither?
what an idiot.
screw the homeless. well, guess what>? if the state doesnt get itslef straightened out, very soon we will all be looking for homeless shelters, even those of us who work. to bad the govenor will never know how that feels?

EMT, just another reason Providence (and the rest of the state) should privatize part of the EMS sector. Do you really need to tie up a rescue and 1 or 2 cardiacs for those types of calls? Wouldn't the city, taxpayers and the firefighters themselves be better used for a true emergency? Instead, you rely on the mutual aid system and then complain guys are overworked.

Ironically, poverty are one of the major cause of alcoholism. Those that can hardly find a money sometimes resulted on buying alcoholic drinks believing that it would help them forget their problems. Well in fact, it absolutely does not help any, worst is that it adds up more problem to you and even to the community. Being a drunkard is a nuisance to the society and more often a problem to the government. Aside from solving the problem of being homeless, government would have another problem with your medications. These would cost them more and all the people would be affected since this would be subsidize from the taxes the people paid.
