PROVIDENCE -- A Providence man, whom the police say accompanied the alleged shooter of drug dealer Leonardo Manzano in August, is due in court again today for a bail hearing. Gilbert Green, 18, of 28 Somerset St., faces one count of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree robbery, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, one count of discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, and one count of possession of a handgun without a permit. The Providence police said Kendell "Buck" Bliss arranged to buy drugs from Manzano, 19, of 204 Saratoga St. Bliss and Green allegedly went to Clym Street to meet -- and rob -- Manzano. As Manzano sat in the front seat of a car parked at the curb, with another man sitting behind the wheel, Bliss showed him some cash, including hundred-dollar bills, authorities said. Manzano allegedly reached to the back seat, where marijuana was stashed beneath a blanket, but Bliss pulled out a .357 magnum handgun and announced a robbery by saying, "You're burnt." The men exchanged some words before the car began to pull away. Bliss fired once. The bullet hit Manzano in his upper right back, wounding him fatally. While Green did not carry a gun, Michael J. Healey, a spokesman for Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch, has said Green is considered as culpable as Bliss under "felony murder theory." In November, Bliss was charged with murder; discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence, death resulting; first-degree robbery; conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery; and, possession of a firearm without a license. Bliss has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail at at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. |
