NORTH KINGSTOWN -- The Wreaths Across America parade will stop by the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park in North Kingstown around noon today. It will be the only stop in Rhode Island as the caravan travels from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The wreaths will be placed on the tombstones of the fallen soldiers at a ceremony Saturday at noon. (Concurrent wreath-laying ceremonies will be held at veterans' sites across the country, including Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter and Glocester Veterans Memorials in Glocester). The nationwide project started in 1992 by Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine, which donates the wreaths. The parade is the longest, both in duration and distance, taking a week to travel the 750-mile trip along Route 1. The parade travels one mile for each one thousand of the approximately 750,000 men and women who fought for the U.S. Local officials and members of the Rhode Island National Guard will welcome the parade and escort participants at the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park, 21 Iafrate Way. The Connecticut Patriot Guard Riders and Connecticut State Police will meet the parade at the Connecticut border. |
