Editor Tina Brown's star-studded Daily Beast is perhaps the perfect place for this blog post -- a first-person report by Andrea Reynolds, former mistress of socialite Claus von Bulow, whose wife, Sunny, died last weekend after being in a coma for 28 years. Von Bulow had been accused -- twice -- of trying to murder his heiress wife, whose residences included a mansion in Newport, where both were part of the high society scene. His sensational first trial, held in Newport in 1982 after his wife was found unconscious in their Bellevue Avenue estate, was a highlight in itself. Though convicted, he won an appeal, and a second trial in 1985 in Providence acquitted him. Later, as part of a settlement after a civil suit, Bulow had to agree not to talk about the case or his former wife. Now, Reynolds has come forth with her own version of events, including the ritzy bar where she says she met Sunny after her husband-before-Claus smashed her over the head with a champagne bottle. Her story starts this way: I met Sunny von Bulow more than two decades before I fell in love with her husband, Claus von Bulow. Sunny and Claus were two charming, flamboyant socialites at the very top of American high society. So when Sunny was found unconscious on the floor of the couple's Newport, Rhode Island mansion in December of 1980--and Claus was accused of attempting to murder her--the trial became one of the 20th century's most sensational. Claus was ultimately acquitted on appeal, but Sunny never woke up from her deep sleep. Last Saturday, after 28 years in a coma, she finally passed away in a New York nursing home. I will never understand how a woman of Ms. Reynold's 'calibre' becomes one's mistress and moves into an apartment implicating a wife in a coma. When you watch the man you love flirting constantly, it must be devastating. A divorce could have come in handy, instead of a sad story of falling into a coma. Simply appalling to have an affair while a dying woman is fighting for her life and sleep with a man you are unsure of his innocence. How degrading to be known as a possible murderer's mistress and the lack of class to move into their home, while a human being is fighting each day for her life. May Sunny rest in peace - 28 years is a long time to hang on to life to maybe name your killer and Mr. Von Bulow can now breathe freely, as the truth will never be known.
