PROVIDENCE -- An engine compartment fire led to the evacuation of about 40 Pleasant View Elementary School students from a First Student school bus this afternoon. No one was injured, according to a School Department spokeswoman. Spokeswoman Christina O'Reilly said the driver of Bus 8 "did a tremendous job" in identifying the problem quicky and getting everyone off the bus. She also credited efforts by bus monitors who were on board. She said students were immediately picked up by another First Student bus, which finished the route of the disabled bus, dropping children off at home. A Fire Department dispatcher said the fire was put out fairly quickly. -- projo.com staff writer Michael P. McKinney |
