NORTH KINGSTOWN -- The Rhode Island National Guard will hold a groundbreaking at 2 p.m. today for two training facilities to be located at Quonset Air National Guard Base and the Quonset Army National Guard Armory.

The ceremony will be at the Quonset National Guard Base, 13 Minuteman Way, North Kingstown Rhode Island.

Present at the ceremony will be Governor Carcieri, Sen. Jack Reed, Congressman Patrick Kennedy, and Maj. Gen. Robert T. Bray, adjutant general of Rhode Island and commanding general of the Rhode Island National Guard.

The project calls for the Army National Guard to replace its 64,000-square-foot World War II-era aviation facility with a new 136,00-square-foot Army aviation complex. The $43-million complex will allow for the modernization and expansion of maintenance, flight operations, flight line services, administration, and both ground and aviation training.

The Air National Guard is also planning to move one of its newest units, the 102nd Information Warfare Squadron, to a new $5-million facility at the Quonset Air National Guard Base. The unit is currently located at the 1960's-era Coventry Air National Guard Station.

"The addition of these two critical facilities ensures that the R.I. National Guard will remain ready, relevant, and reliable well into the future." Bray said. "The Army Aviation Complex will allow our helicopter units to expand and modernize while the 102 I.W.S.'s new home provides the R.I. National Guard with a top secret facility available to all units while posturing them for future expansion in what is certainly the Air Force's largest growth industry: cyber-space."
