Rhode Island is getting $975,846 in federal aid that congressmen say will aim to prevent homelessness. The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded the money to help feed and shelter the hungry and homeless, U.S. Reps. Patrick J. Kennedy and James Langevin announced today. According to a news release, Congress authorizes the money as part of the National Board of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program to help social service agencies around the country. The grants are used to supplement food, shelter, rent, mortgage, and utility assistance programs for people with non-disaster related emergencies. The money from the food shelter program is appropriated yearly under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, providing money to more than 12,000 agencies nationally. |
