PROVIDENCE -- Rhode Island children who need tutors will be able to get them online between 2 and 10 p.m., any day of the week, as part of a Web resource that officials are announcing this morning.

The state has contracted, as part of its library services, with tutor.com, a New York City-based company that provides online tutors. The tutor.com resource is part of an announcement today by Governor Carcieri and state library officials at Providence Public Library's main branch.

Some 2,200 English- and Spanish-speaking tutors are part of the program, including graduate students, professors, and teachers.

The state already contracts with Providence Public Library for about $1 million per year to provide services to libraries and Rhode Island residents, as well as providing computer data services to the state.

The additional tutor service is not an additional cost, said Karen Mellor, the library program director for the state Office of Library and Information Services.

Mellor said the state is shifting some of the money its uses annually in contract with the Providence Public Library to new online services such as tutor.com
To get access to some of the additional resources, residents have to go through the Web site askri.org, where they will find links to tutor.com and links to other things, such as encyclopedias.
