Pawtucket, Providence next stops for Buy Local RI

PROVIDENCE -- Take this as a reminder to make the day a shopping day, of local products that is.

Providence is kicking off its fourth annual Buy Providence campaign at noon today, linking the buy-local initiative to BUY ART, another program designed to link holiday shoppers with Providence-based retailers who sell original artwork.

This year's Buy Providence is also teaming up with Buy Local RI, a state initiative also aimed at promoting local businesses and local products.

But before coming to Providence, the Buy Local RI team, headed by Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts, will be stopping by neighboring Pawtucket to launch, with Farm Fresh Rhode Island, the Wintertime Market in Hope Artiste Village.

Both stops are part of what Roberts calls her "Main Street" tours, which have previously visited Westerly and Greenville.

So is Roberts practicing what she preaches?

"Actually," her spokesman Michael Tanaka said yesterday, "she did shopping when we were in Westerly."

Roberts reportedly bought some shoes and Christmas gifts, but we are not spoiling the surprise.

The next Main Street walking tour stop will be Wickford, North Kingstown, on Friday, with the tour leaving at 4 p.m. from Blue Hydrangea, 2 Main St.
