A Providence man today was indicted on a murder charge in the September stabbing death of Pedro Baquiax, 38, in Providence. Emilio Gutierrez, 20, of 74 Althea St., third floor, is slated for a Dec. 17 arraignment after being named in the indictment handed up by a Providence County grand jury, according to a news release from Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch's office. The Journal reported in September that Baquiax was stabbed on a Saturday in the 74 Althea St. tenement and later died. Gutierrez was living in a third-floor apartment in that building and was reported to be an alleged illegal immigrant from Guatemala. The police have said they found Baquiax wounded and lying on the ground next to his white Ford Explorer outside his apartment at 9 Baldwin Court, also in the city's West End. A rescue truck took Baquiax to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where he was initially said to be in serious but stable condition. In following days, the police were notified Baquiax had died from his injuries. What had been a felony assault charge against Gutierrez was upgraded to murder by the police. -- projo.com staff writer Michael P. McKinney, with Journal archival reports |
