PROVIDENCE -- In preparation for Saturday's planned opening of the new Route 95 exit connecting southbound traffic to Route 195 east, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation plans some overnight lane closures this week.
Starting at 8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow, one lane will be closed on Route 95 south between Atwells Avenue (exit 21) and Eddy Street (exit 19). By 11 p.m., the DOT will have closed multiple lanes. The closures will allow for the installation of overhead signs related to the new exit 20, according to a DOT news release. All lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Friday night, on the same portion of Route 95 south, two lanes will be closed starting at 10 p.m. The DOT will apply pavement markings, close the old exit 20, and open the new exit, a right-hand exit, which will be approximately 1,000 feet south of the old exit. The DOT plans to have all lanes reopened by 8 a.m. Traffic is expected to become congested on Route 95 south and some downtown streets. In addition to the closure of the current left-side exit off Route 95 south to Route 195 east, two Route 195 exits -- Downtown (exit 1) and Wickenden Street (exit 2) -- will be closed Saturday as well. Other changes coming up include the opening Friday of the fifth lane on the Washington Bridge east and an on-ramp from Plain Street, near Rhode Island Hospital, to Route 195 east, which will open Saturday. That ramp will replace the Friendship Street on-ramp that was closed in May. The timetables could change because of the weather. CommentsLeave a comment |

"Take the RIGHT way to the IWay?"
Glad to see the DOT getting good value for their $500,000 publicity budget.
