Of course, it's always cold if you're jumping into The Bay for a good cause on New Year's Day.

But this year, forecasters say it'll be especially chilly, with wind chills in making it feel like -6 at 9 a.m. It could warm up by noon to a whopping 4 degrees.

If you're plunging, you may want to check the tides before you do.

Here's a list of New Year's Day swims:

Block Island: New Year's Day Polar Bear Swim will be held at noon, sharp, at Fred Benson Town Beach on Corn Neck Road. Polar Swim T-shirts and hot chocolate will be sold. Swimmers -- and spectators -- can keep warm by the large bonfire on the beach.

Galilee: The 18th annual Bucks for Scups swim, to benefit the Point Judith Fisherman Scholarship Fund, begins at noon at Salty Brine Beach, off Sand Hill Cove. Donations of $20 are suggested.

Jamestown: The 33rd annual Penguin Plunge will once again raise money for Special Olympics Rhode Island with a swim that begins at noon at Mackerel Cove.

Little Compton: The Penguin Plunge at South Shore Beach, off South Shore Road, begins at noon, with registration at 11 a.m. Swimmers pay $10 to participate. The event benefits the youth activities council of the Little Compton Community Center.

Matunuck: The 10th annual Dip for Multiple Sclerosis will be hosted by the Joyce Family Pub, off Matunuck Beach Road, which opens at 9 a.m., with the swim taking place at noon.

North Kingstown: The 36th Annual Polar Bear Plunge at 2 p.m. at the North Kingstown Town Beach. Refreshments and certificates provided after the plunge at the Community Center. This event is sponsored by the West Bay Family YMCA.
