It's true. Really. Flakes are falling in Providence. A spot check by two projo.com bloggers -- who opened an exit from the Journal building -- found steady, but for the moment gentle-looking, snowfall in the city. Check in with projo.com throughout the day for storm information, as the storm is expected to deliver heavier snowfall and possibly high winds. Heavy snow has been falling in western Massachusetts and Connecticut, and it's expected to rapidly spread eastward over the next one and a half hours. Along with blowing into Rhode Island, the snow was expected, according to the latest National Weather Forecast, to also reach central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire between 1:30 and 2:30 this afternoon, eventually dropping about eight inches to a foot of snow before the storm ends by midnight. The National Weather Service is warning motorists not to travel this afternoon and tonight. "Driving conditions will become very difficult at best. Only venture out if absolutely necessary." The snowfall is expected to very quickly become heavy and reduce visibility to a quarter of a mile. Snow is predicted to fall at 1 to 2 inches per hour through the evening, the National Weather Service said. Roads during the late afternoon and evening commute will be snow-covered and "very treacherous," according to the winter storm warning from the weather service. Motorists will also have to contend with high winds this afternoon and tonight, especially in Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts. The National Weather Service is warning of considerable blowing and drifting snow, with poor visibility. -- Journal staff writer Amanda Milkovits and projo.com staff writer Michael P.
