PROVIDENCE -- Governor Carcieri today accepted the resignation of Saul Kaplan, executive director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation.

Michael Saul, EDC deputy director, has been named interim director, according to an announcement from the governor's office this morning.

Kaplan has decided to return to the private sector, Carcieri explained in the release.

Carcieri said that Kaplan's "vision to make Rhode Island a leader in the innovation economy has resulted in the State moving up in every national report ranking progress toward creating a new knowledge based economy."

The announcement said Kaplan will continue to focus on business model innovation. Under his leadership, the Business Innovation Factory (BIF) began, an independent, nonprofit agency dedicated to creating a community of innovators working together to explore and test new business models.

The new interim director, Michael Saul, is a Rhode Island business and banking executive with extensive experience in building organizations, particularly in their critical initial start-up phase or in re-organization, according to the press release.

Gov. Befuddled is ... befuddled. Is he on medication? The state's fiscal status is precarious at best, the economy's in freefall, layoffs grow, more companies shutting their doors, Twin River's contemplating bankruptcy and they're stiffing RI vendors who've had to go to court to get paid, but everything's hunky-dory in Gov. Befuddled's world. Maybe Gov. Befuddled ought to do the people of RI a big favor and take early retirement himself. You know, take the $200K pension and retire to Florida. We can;t afford Gov. Befuddled's tenure any longer.
