LITTLE COMPTON -- An 18-year-old carpenter won a million-dollar lottery prize Christmas morning after his mother bought him a $20 scratch ticket in Westport, Mass. The ticket was one of the first presents David Couto opened, said his mother, Anita, who works at the town clerk's office. He and his father turned it in earlier today and the money is already in the bank, she said. Lisa McDonald, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts State Lottery, said the actual prize, after state and federal taxes, is $35,000 per year for 20 years. The family was so nervous about keeping the ticket safe, Mrs. Couto said, her husband put in the inside pocket of his coat, and never took the coat off while they went visiting on Christmas Day. -- Journal staff writer C. Eugene Emery Jr. |
