SOUTH KINGSTOWN -- A fire at a student apartment on the University of Rhode Island's main Kingston campus today was put out shortly after 1 p.m. The fire appeared to have started in an electrical closet in one of the first-floor apartments in the Terrace Apartments on Quarry Road, according to URI spokeswoman Linda Acciardo. The complex houses undergraduates. Campus responders extinguished the fire and advised the Kingston Fire District and the state fire marshal, who headed to the scene. It was not yet known whether any students will need temporary housing. According to the university's online schedule, today is the start of exams. -- projo.com staff writer Michael P. McKinney, with reports from Journal staff writer Amanda Milkovits CORRECTION: The apartment complex was incorrectly identified in an earlier version of this post based on information provided by URI. Update: Power has been restored to the affected building. The electrical closet was not in an apartment, but rather in the hallway of the building, where it was contained. Residents, none of whom were harmed, have been allowed back in the building.
