Rhode Island's third major TV outlet is laying off employees, but it isn't saying how many people or what positions are being cut.

Like its counterparts at channels 6 and 10, WPRI-TV (Channel 12) and its sister station WNAC Fox Providence (Channel 64) confirmed that they are reducing their staff in this time of lower advertising revenues, following a pattern that has hit TV stations across the country.

"WPRI 12 and Fox Providence are adjusting to the needs of our environment and re-engineering the way we do business," President and General Manager Jay Howell said in an e-mail. "Unfortunately, that means some employees have been released."

Howell said the cuts affect both of the LIN TV-owned stations, which share studios on Catamore Boulevard in East Providence. He would not provide details, saying "we don't normally comment on employee issues."

WJAR (Channel 10) announced that four full-time employees were laid off this week, none of them on-air positions. The station also confirmed that it had laid off seven employees during the spring, including three who were full-time.

WLNE (Channel 6) confirmed this week that one engineering employee was laid off and two open reporting positions have been filled by freelancers.
