WOONSOCKET -- An 85-year-old Cumberland woman died yesterday after she drove into a utility pole on Cass Avenue at Dana Street. Ursula Fontaine was taken to Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, where she was pronounced dead, the police said in a news release today. Witnesses said the 2000 Toyota Avalon driven by Fontaine exited right into traffic from the Kay's lot on Cass Avenue shortly before 3 p.m., and the car quickly accelerated without braking into the utility pole, according to the police. Both front airbags deployed. Fontaine's husband, Paul Fontaine, 86, who was the front-seat passenger, was also taken to Landmark Medical Center. The police said he was treated for injuries that don't appear to be life threatening. The Woonsocket police traffic division is investigating. |
