Waiters representing Providence restaurants take off on the 21st annual Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau Wheelbarrow Race on the Providence River Promenade at the Crawford Street Bridge.

PROVIDENCE -- Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau's 2008 vintage is finally out!

Tasters say this year's Beaujolais Nouveau has raspberry tones.

French law requires the fruity red wine to be released no earlier than one minute past midnight on the third Thursday in November.

The wine is more popular among young people and outside France than with connoisseurs.

Vintners hope the festive atmosphere surrounding Beaujolais Nouveau's release will bring some joy after a soggy summer in which some lost their entire harvests. It was the smallest crop since 1975.

In Providence, the celebrations will come compliments of Pot Au Feu, 44 Custom House St., which hosts the 21st annual Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau Wheelbarrow Race at 10 a.m. on the Providence River Promenade at the Crawford Street Bridge across from Hemenway's.

Teams from the best local restaurants will compete to be the first to bring the wine to Providence.

Prizes will be given to the best decorated wheelbarrows.

Free tastings will be available during lunch and dinner at Pot au Feu. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and barrel tasting will also be offered in the Bistro at Pot au Feu from 5 to 6 p.m.
