| Update: Complete R.I. election returns likely tomorrow »
By Paul Edward Parker PROVIDENCE -- Voter turnout in Tuesday's election set a record for the state of Rhode Island, based on the tally of machine ballots and an estimate of the number of mail ballots still to be counted. According to the state Board of Elections, 446,005 machine ballots were cast in the presidential election. The record, set in the 1992 race among presidential candidates Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and H. Ross Perot, was 453,477. That leaves this year's machine count slightly more than 7,000 short of the record. Elections board executive director Robert Kando estimated 20,000 mail ballots wait to be counted tomorrow and added to the total. "If we're within 7,000, then we'll set a record," Kando said. Earlier today, the elections board did recounts of machine ballots in Cranston and Smithfield. Late this afternoon, the board decided it would deal with counting statewide mail-in ballots tomorrow. |
